How I Turned A Laptop Into A Digital Photo Frame

Items you will need :

Old laptop

High temp glue gun

Wireless keyboard mouse

Patience

Jump drive or memory card at least 8 GB to install puppy Linux

Photo frame kickstand

Linux, I got puppy Linux because of its small footprint.

Download this file Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.3.3

So this is my mark 2 custom device. I call it a opod. I purchased this laptop for 10 dollars so I figured I would turn it into a digital photo frame which I always wanted. My mark 1 opod  died when  I accidentally caused a short on the motherboard. I will not go into extreme detail but if you need help with something just leave a comment. Use the universal usb installer to decide which Linux distro you want and install it on a jump drive or hard drive your choice.

I was using the original keyboard because i could not find my wireless keyboard and wireless mouse but i took everything off except the motherboard and ram.

This shows my linux install succesfully installed. Which ever laptop you decide to strip down don't forget to plan for the space that the battery takes up just because i dont show my battery in the pics dont mean i forgot about it.

Where can you get a digital photoframe that can play all types of media and has wifi and bluethooth and infrared and only weighs about 2 pounds? and cost less than 20 bucks to build ???

To recap I basically took apart a Dell D410 and used only the motherboard and ram and the lcd. I flipped the lcd backwards and set it on top of the motherboard. I insulated the back of the lcd with electrical tape. So I removed the original keyboard, mouse, hard drive and most of the original plastic case. I installed VNC on this opod 2 so I remote desktop into it and control it wirelessly. This laptop also accepts SD cards so I will use that to host pictures to set up a random gallery. I can also use this as a media pod of sorts so when I work on my car I can play music with the audio out and hook it up to a stereo or headphones or my car stereo.

In the near Future I will create different opods marks 3 and 4.  If you need help or have questions about what I did or how I did it let me know and I can create another post  to go into detail on specific things.
