Top things to do after installing Fedora 18

fedora 18

This is the first things I would do after installing Fedora 18 or any recent Fedora release. I am not a Linux expert my level would be novice leaning towards intermediate. This is just the basic things I do after installing Fedora. LEAVE COMMENTS if you guys want me to cover other programs or other Linux operating systems.

For this installs you will have to open up a terminal window and log in as root to apply the given commands.

Fedora utils :

Fedora utils is a utility that once installed it will give you options to update your system and depending on which options you pick it will find the files you need download them and install them for you. This program basically gives options to do essential tweaks and task, install  software which includes Chrome and Skype and other useful software, manage repositories and a lot of maintenance task as well. This program does a shitload of things it’s a must have. This program will install for you most if not all the things covered in this post.

To install Fedora utils:

 su -c "curl http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/satya164:/fedorautils/Fedora_18/home:satya164:fedorautils.repo -o /etc/yum.repos.d/fedorautils.repo && yum install fedorautils"

Enable RPM Fusion Repositories:

By enabling RPM Fusion Repositories we can install applications like Vlc, media-codecs, etc which are not available in Fedora official repositories due to some sort of license issues. A lot of the best programs require this repositories so make sure to enable this.

To enable RPM Fusion enter the following command:

su -c 'yum localinstall --nogpgcheck http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-18.noarch.rpm http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-18.noarch.rpm'

Install Gnome-tweak-tool:

Gnome tweak tool is a utility to customize advance Gnome 3 options. Personally I hate Gnome 3 so I use Fedora 18 with LXDE desktop. LXDE a very simple desktop interface that does not consume too much system resources.  If you have Gnome 3 and you want to use your desktop just like Gnome 2 install this tweak.

yum install gnome-tweak-tool

Install media-codecs and VLC for media playback:

Usually by now you might already have this but just in case.

yum install gstreamer gstreamer-ffmpeg gstreamer-plugins-bad gstreamer-plugins-bad-free gstreamer-plugins-bad-nonfree gstreamer-plugins-base gstreamer-plugins-good gstreamer-plugins-ugly ffmpeg
yum install vlc

Install Adobe Flash plugin:

You can avoid all this shit by just installing the Fedora Utils program, just saying for those that don’t want to install that program then do it the hard way. This is a required plug-in for a lot of websites well most of them.

First add adobe repository by entering the following command:

sudo rpm -ivh http://linuxdownload.adobe.com/adobe-release/adobe-release-i386-1.0-1.noarch.rpm

Import Keys:

sudo rpm --import /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-adobe-linux

Install flash plugin:

yum install flash-plugin

Install OpenJDK Java runtime environment:

Again you can install this using the Fedora Utils but if you don’t want to do it that way here you go.

su -c 'yum install java-*-openjdk java-*-openjdk-plugin'

Gimp:

This program is awesome its free and it can do everything Photoshop can do. Did I mention its Fking free !!!

yum install gimp

That is all for now I will cover other useful programs to download for other operating systems in the near future. LEAVE COMMENTS if you need extra help or want me to go into detail about a certain item.
